In everyday language we talk about “the aircon” or the “A/C”. Mostly, those terms are used to describe the system that cools down temperatures in summer. This was true in the past for earlier generation vehicles, when the air-conditioning was only built in vehicles for this particular cooling function. Automotive engineers have developed a new generation “HVAC” system: Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning.

What does the HVAC system regulate throughout the year?

Temperature regulation:

In summer the HVAC system cools down temperatures and, in the winter, it is responsible for heating the vehicle. Did you know? The temperature differences between the interior and exterior are higher in the winter. In summer the temperatures mostly range from 20°C in the inside of the vehicle to 30°C outside, so in average a difference of 10°C. In winter the differences are higher, ranging from 0°C outside to 20°C inside the vehicle. The bigger the temperature differences are, the more condensation can be found on the evaporator and more condensation forms a perfect ground for microorganisms. That is one reason why you should not switch off the air-conditioning in spring or autumn. When switched off, the system cannot do its job of regulating the moisture.


During the colder months the HVAC system regulates the humidity and removes excessive moisture. This feature helps to remove mist from the vehicle windows.


In winter the HVAC system is melting the ice that has accumulated on the vehicle windows.
